A Few WordPress Plugins

Sunday April 13th, 2014 at 9:06 pm

I had a chance yesterday to do some much needed updates to my blog. One of these was installing some more useful plugins. Plugins aren’t something that I’ve had much of a chance to look into in the past but they can be very helpful to maintaining a blog. WordPress is very popular for having thousands of plugins, it would take hours just to look through the popular ones! Below are several that I’ve installed so far. I recommend anyone starting a blog to look into these.

  • Akismet helps to filter out spam comments. You can view to see which comments were filtered from your blog admin screen.
  • Alpine PhotoTile for Instagram is a plugin/widget for displaying Instagram photos on your blog/sidebar. It’s very easy to use and if you are unfamiliar with how to work with widgets, the plugin provides a shortcode for you to place on your blog.
  • Contact Form is a plugin for creating a nifty contact form. There are a variety of options of what you can do with it, and even more if you upgrade to the paid version (for example: using one form to email multiple departments). One of the features that I like is the form allows your visitors to attach files to their email. I really like this plugin but I’m currently having issues with Gmail filtering the messages as spam and haven’t found a way to fix it.
  • Custom Smilies is an easy way for you to use your own customized smilies. You simply upload the images and create a shortcut code for the smilies. When creating new posts, smilies will appear at the top for you to insert with ease.
  • Search Everything allows you to take the WP search function a little bit further. You can customize it to select what files and pages you want the search engine to pull from, highlight search text, and more. If you want to customize the look of your search bar, simply edit the searchform.php file or if you are using a custom theme, create a searchform.php file and upload it to the directory.
  • WP DB Backup allows you to auto backup your WordPress files and have them emailed to you as often as you like. I haven’t had much chance to try this plugin out but it’s great for people who often forget to do manual backups (like me). Server crashes and mishaps happen so it’s always a good idea to keep backups.
  • WordPress SEO helps you to optimize your blog with a simple plugin. With easy to follow directions, you can easily better your search engine optimization. When posting, you can view a snippet preview of how your link will appear on Google, choose focus keywords and meta tags, and choose a SEO title.
  • WPtouch Mobile Plugin gives your blog a simple, mobile theme when viewed from a cellular device. You can customize the colors of your blog and if you upgrade to the paid version, you can select different themes.

New Layout!! + Some new hauls

    Saturday July 28th, 2012 at 4:53 am

I’m loving Kelly Clarkson’s Dark Side right now, not to mention she’s gorgeous.

Finally a new layout! I’ve been saying for probably months now “I need a new layout, I need a new layout”. I’m surprised I was able to mostly finish it tonight (even if it took me until 4:30 am). My last layout took a week to finish @_@ but that’s the joy of already figuring out most of the coding, you can reuse and go from there. There’s still some minor tweaking to be done here and there.

  • Need to make new header images for the sidebar.
  • Need to revamp the sidebar a bit content wise and looks.
  • Not every link above works yet, I need to spend some time one of these days to write content.
  • Color scheme here and there, I’m still playing around.
  • And whatever else my fickle mind decides to change
  • It’s a little plain but this layout is much simpler and easier on on the eyes than the previous one. I was getting so tired of the orange :/ I was originally going to use hearts but decided today to go with cherry blossoms since I might have a slight obsession with them.

This probably would have taken less time had my FTP not expired on me when I needed to use it. Even though I should have been able to renew my FTP for free, it wasn’t working so I said fuck it and downloaded a new one. I’ll miss WS_FTP LE, it’s been my favorite FTP since high school. FileZilla works well but I’m as fond of it.

I’m such a night owl. I’m far more productive at night than I am during the day :x

My friend recently came back from Korea and brought me a lot of stuff, some I bought and some are gifts. Expect reviews to come in the future for most of these!

The Hello Kitty perfume is awesome. It has a tropical, sweet smell that I love. If I can buy it online I’ll probably buy more in the future. The nail polish I got for fun. I might play around with it later or I might include it in a future giveaway.

These hand creams are adorable! I couldn’t help but get the set and then some. They’re shaped like little eggs and even came in a egg carton like packaging.

Etude House gave me a giant lip pillow for free because I apparently spent so much money there o_O

Isn’t this panda freaking cute? The phone is mine but the charm and phone jack were gifts :3

Jade Valerie is my favorite artist. Even though she’s no longer with Sweetbox, I really wanted one of her CDs.

I forgot to take a picture of it but I also got a pair of white sandals with wings.

These were a few items I bought myself some time back and they’ve just been sitting in my living room. The kitty paw cell phone charm also doubles as a screen cleaner! How cute is that?

    Mondays suck.

    Monday April 2nd, 2012 at 10:00 pm

I don’t know what it is about today. Nothing went terribly wrong but it still seems like everything about me is just being crappy. It could be I’m worn out from last week, it could be that it’s simply Monday, or it could be I’m getting tired and frustrated at a lot of the little things here and there and it’s catching up to me. I’m going to vote on all 3.

I did manage to meet my goal last night by figuring out the coding by Monday like I wanted to. All it took was for me to stay up until 3 am in the morning. All that’s left is some css alterations and small things here and there that I will probably tackle as time goes on. I’m supposed to be working on cosplay tonight but given my current mood, I’m not sure if I’ll get anything done. I’m also frustrated at Michael’s. I’ve been checking for months to see if they sold a 7/8″ black ribbon and have had no luck time after time that I went. The week that I need it for, they happen to sell it again. What is up with that?

I’m going to be on a mini search for a bb cream for a while. It’s something I’ve heard everyone talk about but have never looked into or tried. From what I know about it, it seems that this is exactly what I need for my face. I’m just having a little trouble finding something suitable for me. For now, I’m going to start with Skin79’s Super Hot Pink BB. I’m worried it might be too light for my skin but I’ve heard good things about it and would love to give it a try.

Off to trying to be productive for what remainder of the night I have remaining :]

EDIT — The layout is up and done for the most part but I’ll probably be tweaking it here and there for a bit. I don’t know what I’m going to do with it entirely, I like it but I don’t particularly thing it flows well so I’ll be playing around to see if I can find something that works better. More content will be added over time as well. The rest of the week will have to be dedicated to getting cosplays together :)

I’m ready for another weekend already.

    Monday April 2nd, 2012 at 12:07 am

There needs to be more days in the weekend :/

I can’t really say if the weekend was more productive or less productive than what I would have liked. For the most part, I’ve figured out the problems with coding the layout and the biggest issue was working around it to make it compatible with Google Chrome. Now as much as I love browser, as it is my default, it had beyond annoyed me this weekend *sigh* Everything has been fixed minus one issue that I cannot figure out even though I spent hours trying to fix it last night. Every time I fix the problem, it creates another one and once I fix that, another one is created. So at this point, I’m not sure what I’ll do. I wanted to have it up by the end of tonight but that probably won’t happen.

My Julep package arrived on Saturday while I was at work, which was a very nice surprise. I haven’t looked at the contents specifically yet. I can’t wait to review it but I’ll probably have to wait until after next weekend to review both the Julep package and the Beauty Fix one as I have a 3 day anime convention this weekend and most of this week will be spent getting ready for it. I really am fantastic at procrastinating, which usually screws me over one way or another. I needed to sew some fabric onto one of my things but luckily for me, this was the week that my mom lent the sewing machine out. I actually can’t even remember a time she has done that.

It’s shower time. I’m currently using the Freeman cucumber peel-off face mask that I received with my one of My Glam bags and I love this stuff. It’s cheap but it makes my face feel amazingly smooth afterwards. I am sad I did not discover face masks earlier, they really are a treat.

I saw this on Shwinlewin’s blog and am considering taking on the challenge although I will definitely not be able to post daily and will most likely be doing multiple days in a single post. It seems like a fun idea and would get me into taking more pictures, which is something I like to get into the habit so we’ll see how it works out.

Welcome to only-dreaming.net, a blog belonging to a girl named Jennifer. After about 7 years, I’ve decided to come back to the world of blogging :) I’ve had a lot of fun blogging in the past it’s definitely something I am wanting to come back to and get started up again.

I generally don’t like to use templates or pre-made layouts but I decided that I would much rather get this blog up and running and go from there. A layout is very much in the works but I’m currently having problem with text placement and how I want it to look overall. It is almost complete minus some details so I can’t wait to have it up :) I also haven’t coded in over 7 years so this will be interesting getting back into the swing of things. Excuse the lack of content at the moment, everything will be coming slowly but surely. It’s things like this that makes me wish I definitely had more hours in a day.

I’m currently still in the planning stages of deciding everything I want to do for the blog. Right now you will most definitely find a lot of reviews (possible giveaways in the future?), my boring yet maybe something will happen daily life, and of course my current interests whether its cosplay, food, video games, friends, etc. I am currently in the stages of finding my place in life so this will generally be a journey about that and everything I discover along the way.
